Stress relieve


A means to take residual stress out of an object.

This is very important with lapped seal faces, especially after carbon/ graphite has been inserted into a metal holder.

Stress relieving is also done to retard corrosion after metal is formed into a shape. Stressed metal corrodes at a rate faster than unstressed metal.

Stress relieving is accomplished by one of the following methods:

  • Heat the part to its annealing temperature and then cool the part. Repeat this several times.
  • Blast the part with small diameter “shot” to relieve manufactured or induced stresses.
  • Let the face holder composite relax over a period of time and then relap the face.
